A new feature on select Dewalt cordless and corded tools is what Dewalt calls their Lanyard Ready system. The Lanyard Ready system allows users working on elevated jobsites to secure their tools while still allowing them to work as normal.
On certain 20v max tools a lanyard attachment point is secured on each side of the tool where the belt hook normally goes, although it’s unclear if the belt hook is usable while the lanyard system is attached. Also available is an attachment that goes on the rear of the battery and is attached with 2 of the battery’s original screws. The battery’s lanyard latch then hooks onto the attachment point on the 20v max tool. For the lanyard attachment points that come with the 20v max DCK299P2LR hammer drill and impact driver kit, a red area resembling a spring starts to show when the lanyard has been stressed or worn out (this feature may also apply to the grinder lanyards, but I couldn’t find any pictures or info of it at the time of writing). For the DWE4222N 4.5” grinder, the lanyard attachment point is on the rear of the unit and is right below the strain relief for the power cord. The same design also applies to their DWE46144N and DWE46166N electric 6” cut off tools.
At the time of writing the Lanyard Ready system is only available on the tools mentioned, but I suspect it will show up on more tools soon and maybe even a kit for existing tools.
My thoughts: I really like that Dewalt is bringing a solution to the market that will keep tools from falling on others on the jobsite, and will decrease the failure rate on the tool due to impacts over the life of the tool, making it potentially more economical to get the Lanyard Ready option and reducing the liability of injuries due to falling tools. The design looks easy to use, out of the way and I really like that it’s able to be used on tools without any modification (as long as it is designed for that specific tool).
