Ryobi 18V 7-1/4″ Sliding Miter Saw PBT01B

Reader Daniel Morgan wrote in about spotting a new Ryobi 18V power tool on the HD website and its the PBT01B 18V 7-1/4″ sliding miter saw.

As you can see from the above image, Ryobi does have a brand new miter saw model as part of their 18V system. Although it uses a smaller 7-1/4″ blade, same size as standard circular saws, it does offer the ability to slide for a longer horizontal cut of up to 2×10 capacity.

Of course with a small blade, it makes it a very portable saw good for cutting dimensional 2x lumber and base boards and crown molding. Although Ryobi’s marketing statement and features bullet list doesn’t list vertical cut capacity, I was able to scroll down the HD page where they mention a vertical cut capacity (maximum cutting thickness of 3.375″ which is just over 3-1/4″ inches which will limit how tall boards like floor trim and crown molding you can cut. Usually a miter saw with a larger 10 or 12 inch blade is needed for taller cuts but this little miter saw should be plenty for someone that works with smaller boards and 2x lumber and it’s small size and battery operability lend for greater portability than a larger corded model.

Ryobi states you can get up to 500 cuts with a 9ah battery (not included) although no mention of what size and material renders that many cuts.

Two larger carry handles are mounted on the sides of the base for easy carrying and also includes the standard material clamp. It does say it features an electric brake which is a nice feature to stop the blade automatically after you release the trigger so you don’t have to wait for the blade to stop before working on the next step.

I didn’t see any mention of a cut line indicator whether in the form of laser or LED shadow system so it appears it may not have one at all. If it does, they forgot to mention. I tried looking at the posted manual at the time of writing for more info although they mistakenly put the manual to a 10″ 36V PB3650 model that came out years ago instead so no point in checking that out.

Other than the fact that it can slide and has an electric brake and is battery powered, it looks like a pretty basic model without any fancy features like a cut line indicator light system, or double bevel, or easy to use cam lock lever as it uses the old basic twist to lock miter angle knob.

It’s available now and is priced at $199 as a baretool.

A big thanks to Daniel Morgan for spotting!

They discontinued the 10 in sliding miter saw that was powered by 2 18V batteries for this? What a disappointment.
