Bauer 12 Amp 6 inch Benchtop Jointer – Jointers Explained
Harbor Freight is no stranger to woodworking tools. Central Machinery has been their in-house brand pumping out woodworking machines in the past. Though it appears that their more mainstream in-house brands are starting to take over and this includes their woodworking tools as well. Bauer is now Harbor Freight’s more mainstream brand with catchy red colors that will give you those “Craftsman” tool vibes. Bauer is the brand they’ve used to bring a new benchtop jointer to market.
What is a benchtop jointer? A jointer is a power tool designed to flatten out any surface imperfections on wood like bowing, cupping, etc by removing any high/low spots to even the whole thing out for a perfectly flat surface. This is helpful to enable “jointing” of two pieces of wood evenly flat against another. This is done by running a board on the top of the jointer plane as the spinning cutting blades even out the bottom surface. It usually takes several passes to get the desired results.
Jointers are usually large machinery with their own base and they take up their own floor space. Smaller benchtop versions are so compact they can be picked up and placed on a benchtop such as this model. While regular sized jointers have large infeed and outfeed tables which helps work with longer boards, benchtop models have very short in/outfeed tables which limits them boards with shorter length.
Bauer 12 Amp 6 inch Benchtop Jointer – Features
This model uses 12 small individual square 4-sided steel cutters as opposed to single wide steel cutters. The advantage of this is that if the blade gets nicked and needs replacing, you only need to replace one piece instead of an entire wide blade piece. Also since each insert is 4-sided, it means each one can be used 4 times as if it were 4 separate inserts. When one side gets dull or nicked, just rotate it a quarter turn to a fresh side. Cutting width for boards is 6 inches in capacity and up to 1/8″ max depth per pass.
It has an aluminum fence that can be angle for bevel cuts and has fence stops at 45°, 90°, and 135°. The base is said to be heavy duty for improved stability and less vibration.
The left side is equipped with a chip blower dust chute that can be attached to a vacuum hose or dust extractor with it’s 2-1/2″ dust port. A vac or dust extractor is recommended since these spit out a ton of saw dust and shavings. The in/outfeed table ends have built in handles for easy transport.
