Bauer 35 Gallon Dust Collector – Features – What’s new

Bauer 35 Gallon Dust Collector

As mentioned in our recent coverage of the Bauer benchtop jointer, Harbor Freight’s classic woodworking tools which were mostly Central Machinery branded, are now being updated to their more mainstream brands like Bauer. Their big dog 35 gallon dust collector has always been their go to shop tool for serious woodworkers because nobody wants a shop full of saw dust and wood chip/shavings.

Though they still sell the Central Machinery 35 gallon dust collector at Harbor Freight for $299.99 at the time of writing. But yet they also have a new 35 gallon dust collector with the Bauer branding with its eye catching red color that gives you those “Craftsman” tool vibes.

So what’s new on the Bauer model? First off is the price as it’s $150 more at $449.99 are you out of your mind. Are we paying a Benjamin and a half more for a red paint job? No, as this new model does offer some upgrades. The main one is the metal canister (pleated paper) filter on top. Not only is it a proper filter (as the old model used a simple cloth bag) it has better filtration. It can filter out particles down to 2 microns, as opposed to 5 on the Central machinery bag filter. This is better for your lung health. The filter also has a double handle on top that when turned helps filter paddles dislodge dust on the inside of the canister.

The filter and bag section gets beefed up stand legs as well which should make it a bit more sturdy. I have the Central Machinery dust collector, and those stand legs aren’t very stable. They get the job done but are still very flimsy and don’t inspire confidence. Looks like Harbor Freight addressed this on the Bauer model.

Bauer 35 Gallon Dust Collector – Features Continued

Other than that everything else is similarly featured and even has some downgrades. For instance the induction motor on the Bauer unit is rated at 1.5 horsepower compared the the OG model’s 2 HP. Which means that airflow goes down as well to 1200 CFM compared the OG models 1550 CFM.

All other features are similar with a 4 inch y-shaped hose adapter for up to two 4 inch hoses. And the base uses 4 360 degree castors with some of them equipped with a locking mechanism to keep the unit in place.

The new Bauer branded 35 gallon dust collector is available now at $449.99. What do you think, does the new filter upgrade warrant the price hike despite the motor downgrades?

  • 98% efficient down to 2 microns
  • High-velocity 1200 CFM air flow for powerful dust collection
  • Manual filter paddles clean internal dust from filter pleats for prolonged filter life
  • 4 in. Y-shaped hose adapter for running 2 machines at once
  • Single-stage design for ultra quiet operation
  • Fully enclosed, lubricated, fan-cooled motor rated for continuous duty
  • Industrial controls for years of trouble-free use
  • 4 casters for effortless maneuverability

It’s nice to see them investing in some bench top tools. Seems like the pickings have gotten less and less lately especially with the demise of Sears.
