Power tool progress has never stalled and keeps going forward. Most notably, cordless power tools keep getting stronger and smaller and lighter. Dewalt has now made a new 20V DCF894 1/2″ Mid Range Impact Wrench that has the size of a small and compact impact wrench but with full size power of larger models of years past.
The Dewalt 20V DCF894 1/2″ Mid Range Impact Wrench follows the footsteps of Milwaukee’s recent M18 Fuel Mid Torque impact wrenches with the same philosophy of packing large power in a small compact body, more torque than compact impact wrenches but less than high torque impact wrenches. A new category called Mid Torque impact wrenches although Dewalt calls theirs a Mid-Range impact wrench probably to differentiate themselves from the existing Milwaukee mid torque model. Dewalt’s 20V DCF894 1/2″ Mid Range Impact Wrench however has considerably less power at 330 ft-lbs fastening torque which is less than Milwaukee’s Mid Torque model at 450 ft-lbs fastening torque.
Dewalt’s model is also not as lean as Milwaukee’s mid torque wrench with the DCF894 1/2″ Mid Range Impact Wrench coming in at 6.95 inches in length versus the 6.7 inches on the Milwaukee. Not a big difference really and I doubt any will see a difference in size unless they are put side by side.
Dewalt’s 20V DCF894 1/2″ Mid Range Impact Wrench has 3 modes and with a very interesting feature which is what they call “Precision Wrench Control”, which helps add more control when using the tool in forward and reverse. In Forward, the tool will pause before impacting to help prevent over tightening. In Reverse, the tool lowers speed when fastener is loose to help prevent run-off. It’s also packing a brushless motor which helps provide the amount of torque it has in a small package and has the usual conveniences such as a variable speed trigger, LED light and belt clip.
The main take away of the new Dewalt 20V DCF894 1/2″ Mid Range Impact Wrench is that with 330 ft-lbs torque you’re getting lots of power in a small package. It was not that long ago that many “high” torque impact wrench models were packing torque in the 300 ft-lbs range but with massive and heavy power tool bodies. So packing 330 ft-lbs torque in a very compact size is a great feat. However I can’t help but feel it will always be overshadowed by Milwaukee’s model with considerably more torque at 450 ft-lbs versus Dewalt’s 330 ft-lbs.
The Dewalt 20V DCF894 1/2″ Mid Range Impact Wrench will come in a friction ring model and a hog ring model and will be priced at $199 as a baretool or $399 as a two 5.0ah battery kit with charger and tool bag and is stated to come out late December 2017 to mid January 2018.
