Klein Tools announces a new Vaco line of step drill bits. Vaco is what you get when you combine the spanish words vato and taco. Vaco is the unofficial tool brand of choice for vatos that like tacos. What is Vaco?
Let’s address the elephant in the room, what is Vaco? The Vaco products company was a tool company in Jonesville, MI. They are a manufacturer of screwdrivers, nut drivers, hex-key wrenches, electrical terminals and connectors, plus other related equipment. In 1986 Vaco was acquired by Klein. That’s why these step drill bits are Vaco branded and you might also find other Klein Tools with the Vaco brand as well.
Klein Vaco Step Drill Bits Features
Klein Tools new line of Vaco drill bits feature dual spiral flutes. They are designed to remove chips and help pull the bit through the material for fast cutting. They also feature titanium nitride coating which is said to dissipate heat for longer bit life. Each bit comes with a 1/4″ hex shank making it compatible with drills and impact drivers.
They have split point tips which are said to help starting holes and prevents bit drifting when pressure is given. Inside the spiral flutes is where you’ll find laser etched size markings for each step. These step drill bits can be used with steel up to 16 gauge, plastic, aluminum, and wood. However as with all step drill bits, they work best with thin material such as sheet metal.

Klein Vaco step drill bits are available individually or as kits. The bit sets are shown above and below and come in 3 or 4 piece kit sets. The kit sets include a storage case and cutting oil. Individual Vaco step drill bits don’t appear to come with a case or oil.
