Over the past few years, Milwaukee has been busy building up their M18 line to have a nice assortment of battery powered outdoor power equipment however while the main staples were there, there was one key ingredient missing which was a cordless mower. Many of us have been anxiously waiting and the wait is over as they’ve just announced the new mower and it’s the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 21″ Self Propelled Dual Battery Mower 2823-22HD .

You can see it in the above image and it doesn’t disappoint as it’s full of features you’d expect from a pro brand. A steel deck with 21″ cut capacity, brushless motor, self propelled mode, large all terrain wheels, cut height adjustments, easy push button starts, covered battery port, and the ability to mulch, bag, and side discharge. It even has lights with a two sets of lights with a set up in front and a set on the sides just in front of the rear tires to give you front and side illumination.
The front and side lights are shown above and as you can see, it has nice visibility in low light and illuminates around the mower nicely. Milwaukee says it has 180 lighted visibility thanks to its onboards lights. I have an Ego Mower with lights and it makes mowing at night or early morning easy since I can see where I’m going and battery powered mowers are a lot quieter than gas mowers meaning you can mow earlier and later in the day and not disturb your neighbors in the same way a gas engine mower would.
36 Volt Mower?
This mower has a dual battery bay which covers the batteries and keeps them protected from the elements. What’s interesting about it having a dual battery bay is that it’s not just there to increase runtime but Milwaukee states that two M18 batteries are required to operate the mower. Does this mean that it’s the first Milwaukee power tool to use two 18V batteries in series to double the voltage to 36 Volts in the same manner as how Makita’s X2 power tools operate? It seems like that’s the case however Milwaukee doesn’t go out and say if it’s a 36 volt mower or not so I have reached out to them to see if it really is a 36 volt mower. My guess is that it is but let’s wait and hear back from them for the answer.
What we do know is that this mower appears to be very powerful (at least on paper) and let me tell you why I think so. Milwaukee goes out and says that their new mower produces more torque than a 200cc gas engine mower. Also, it comes as a kit with 12ah batteries. One 12ah battery is a lot of capacity and this mower is said to offer runtime of up to 60 minutes with two 12ah batteries! (Claimed runtime is rated at 3mph self propelled mode and removing an 1″ of grass.) That tells me that it’s pulling a lot of power to run down huge batteries in an hour. To compare, the Ego 56V mower I reviewed was a powerful mower and achieved a similar 60 minute (claimed) runtime with a 56V 7.5ah battery. That battery is 420wh and two M18 12ah batteries equals to 432wh and the Milwaukee can deplete it in the same time frame so my guess is that it may be just as powerful as the 56 volt Ego mower since it has a similar power draw.
The self propelled feature drives the rear wheels and is variable speed from 0.1 to 4 mph, the height adjustments are made easy with a single point height adjustment with 7 positions from 1″ to 4″. Of course like most push mowers, its handle bars can pivot forward to “fold” the mower for compact storage. As an optional accessory, you can purchase a separate mower cover for storage.
The new Milwaukee M18 Fuel mower is scheduled to launch April 2022 and it aint cheap at $999 as a kit price. I wonder if they will offer it as a baretool which makes sense to lower the cost since many users already have plenty of M18 batteries and chargers. Just keep in mind that this mower is optimized for M18 XC and HD batteries so don’t expect the same performance and runtime if you use it with a pair of compact 2.0ah batteries.
