When I think of pro cordless power tool 18V platforms that have a healthy dose of cordless outdoor power equipment I think of none other than Makita. While they already have a cordless 18 volt string trimmer, they also have an upgraded model powered by a brushless motor. The sweet thing about brushless motors is that they are more efficient and you get more runtime. This model follows that tradition giving you up to 60 minutes of runtime with a 3.0 ah battery, this is 15 minutes more runtime when compared to the previous model. You can expect more runtime if you own larger capacity batteries such as the 4.0 ah or the new 5.0 ah Makita LXT 18 volt battery.
It also has a slightly larger cutting capacity than the previous model at 11-3/4″ cutting width which leads me to believe it might have more power to take on the slightly larger cutting width. I haven’t tried it out so this is only an assumption if it is a bit more powerful. The weight went up a bit at 8.6 lbs which is still very light. A feature that stands out compared to the previous model is that this model has 2 speeds with 0-3,500 & 0-6,000 rpm. This is a neat feature to have as you can keep it on low speed to conserve power for maximum runtime and whip it up into high speed for more power to cut down thick patches.
Whats great about these cordless string trimmers is that you don’t have to fuss with a gasoline engine. No more mixing oil and gasoline as well as consuming them and no more dealing with a pull string. Just grab a fresh battery from the charger and your ready to go.
