Slapping a USB charger to power tool batteries is nothing new. Now, don’t get me wrong, being able to charge your mobile devices on the by using the juice stored in your power tool batteries is great. It’s just that we’ve seen it done many times before and they add them to many other tools so it’s hard to get excited for them nowadays. Especially when they’ve been known to be quite slow at charging. Sure, they’ve improved with faster charging speeds but they usually don’t keep up with tech.

Milwaukee M18 TOP OFF Charger & Power Supply 2847-20

That’s where things take a turn for the better with Milwaukee’s latest power supply, the M18 TOP OFF model. This power supply takes USB charging and doesn’t mess around. Gone are the dinosaur USB-A ports (the large OG rectangle shaped USB ports) and you find only two modern USB-C ports. And one of them is a 100 watt port for charging both ways! This provides very fast charging not just for smartphones and tablets, but also power hungry devices like laptops equipped with USB ports.

The other USB-C port does 15 watts (yawn) so the spotlight goes to the main 100W port. The good news is this power supply can output at a total of 115 watts so you can use both ports at full blast. The 100W port can also be used to charge M18 batteries. That’s why the TOP OFF is called a charger and power supply.

Above is a nifty little graph that shows you how many times you can charge things like phones, tablets, and laptops with a specific battery attached. Obviously the larger the capacity of the M18 battery, the more times you can charge devices. It’s cool to see that even a humble M18 2ah battery can charge the average phone around 2 times. Or a tablet once. Not bad!

In that graph we also see how long it takes to charge an M18 battery at a given capacity with the included charger – more on that below.

The M18 TOP OFF is supplied with a 100W 3 foot USB-C cable and a 65W USB-C wall adapter charger. This wall adapter charger is so you can charge M18 batteries. With this setup you’ll be able to charge an M18 XC5.0ah battery in around 105 minutes (1 hour 45 minutes). That’s not the fastest charging but it’s not much different than a stock M18 charger (not a rapid charger). And the good news is that you should be able to charger M18 batteries faster if you have a faster wall charger that can output 100 watts.

You also might be thinking, Milwaukee already has a M18 TOP OFF 175W power supply and with more total watts out, the old one is much better than the new one. Technically yes and no. True, the older 175W TOP OFF model does have considerably more watts output and also has an AC port for 120V appliances. So in that sense it’s better because it has more watts and offers an AC port, which the new model is missing. It also has a rafter hook which the new one doesn’t.

However the older TOP OFF has a USB port that maxes out at 45 watts. So if you need high speed high wattage charging, then the new TOP OFF model with its 100W port takes the win. Also the old one doesn’t charge M18 batteries while the new one does. So each one is better in their own unique ways. But if you need ultimate USB charging and the ability to charge M18 batteries, the clear winner is the new model. If you need an AC port then the older model is the clear winner.

This new Milwaukee M18 TOP OFF charger and power supply is expected to launch August 2025 and will be priced at $99.
