Ridgid already had a brushless 18V cordless 1″ SDS + rotary hammer with their Octane version so technically they didn’t need a new model. But in this day and age that in order to stay relevant, brands need to come out with new SKU’s to garner renewed attention to their brand, Ridgid has released a new cordless 18V brushless 1″ rotary hammer with the new R86712B model. Even though on paper, it shares the same specs as the Octane model with a max 1″ hammer drilling capacity, 1,400 RPM and 5,000 BPM, besides the new exterior facelift, Ridgid says that this new model drills 10% than the previous Octane R86711B model.
Appearance-wise the new model ditches the “bold, in your face” styling of the Octane model for a more conservative yet sleek look. It also looks as though the proportions are “tucked in” compared to the Octane. It looks like some components were recycled and make their way to the new model such as the mode selector dial and the side handle, except the side handle gets the all black treatment on the new model. The LED light makes a comeback in a similar spot although with a new lens shape, the mode dial has the same 3 settings of hammer drill, hammer only, and rotary only. It also has a feature called DVR, and no it’s not a digital video recorder. It won’t record your favorite reruns of Cops. Here DVR is their marketing name for their vibration reduction technology that is said to “utilize dual vibration reduction technology”. They claim it has 50% less vibration although they don’t mention what brand and model they are comparing it to. One feature that is missing or is not mentioned is a feature that was found on the Octane model, the Octane model was said to have a mechanical clutch that would help minimize torque reaction when the bit binds. This feature is not mentioned at all on this new model meaning it probably doesn’t have it.
