Ridgid R86039 18v Octane Brushless 1/4” 6 Mode Impact Driver

Ridgid has been releasing lots of new tools to their Octane line lately, with the latest being the new R86039 18v Octane brushless 1/4” 6 mode impact driver. With 6 different speed/power modes, this is one of the more feature rich impact drivers on the market, which is a nice update from the previous model, which only had 3 dedicated speeds. While the 3 speeds work very well, this new impact driver features 3 speed and 3 specialty modes for a few common applications.

My thoughts: I have the Octane reciprocating saw, 4-1/2” grinder, and hammer drill, and I’ve been impressed with the performance and price, as well as the ergonomics. While the hammer drill has most of the top features, this new impact driver is sporting the most speeds and modes of any of the Octane tools to date. This brings Ridgid up to a more competitive level with the other major brands such as Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Makita. The modes are switched by using 2 buttons, one for the speeds, and the other is for changing between the specialty modes. In addition to 3 normal speeds, the 3 specialty modes are for self tapping screws, fastener assist mode which ramps up the rpms once the fastener is started, and an auto mode which stops the motor once the impacting starts. This new impact driver is making an impressive claim of 2,400 in lbs of torque, making it the highest specd in the 18v/20v class, although we’ll have to see that to believe it since previous models haven’t outperformed lower spec’d impact drivers. While 2,400 in lbs is a very high rating, with the reputation the Octane tools are making, hopefully this will be one of if not the top performer on the market. Overall this looks like a really nice impact driver with some excellent features and specs.
