I was browsing around on Ebay when I found this crazy contraption that allows you to use Dewalt Makita or Milwaukee 18V Batteries on Ryobi 18V Tools. This type of tool is an adapter that sits between an incompatible battery and the Ryobi tool. I say incompatible battery because Ryobi tools can only accept Ryobi batteries, so if it’s not a Ryobi battery, then its not compatible with the Ryobi tool.
Each adapter only lets you use one brand battery on a Ryobi tool. For example the Makita to Ryobi adapter only lets you use Makita batteries on Ryobi tools, the Dewalt to Ryobi adapter is the same thing and so is the Milwaukee adapter, which means you have to buy a separate adapter if you want to use a different brand battery.
I’ve seen and heard of cross battery adapters before but those were usually the homemade brew, but the one I found on Ebay was a mass produced model.
The adapters themselves appear to be decently made but it’s really hard to tell their quality from the few shots and angles. The maker even has a YouTube video of them in action to let you know they work. One thing I see missing on the offbrand adapter is that it’s missing the press button tabs on the sides of the adapter that you find on real Ryobi batteries. This means that the adapter slides into place but doesn’t lock on and appears that only friction is holding it in place. I’d be skeptical of it falling out from vibrations and use.
They seller is based in Australia and sells them for $69.99 in Australian Currency with a $25 shipping fee also in Australian currency. Not exactly cheap for what they are in my opinion.
What do you guys think? Is this something you guys would use? I also want to mention Dewalt has one of these called the DCA1820 which lets you use Dewalt 20V batteries on the older Dewalt 18V tools. The only difference there is that their product is an official quality product produced and sold by Dewalt.

Great idea, but 95 Aus dollars is about $73 usd, a little steep. I’d love to buy the Ryobi tire inflator and use my 9.0 m18 battery in it. I don’t have any Ryobi tools at present and don’t feel like starting another battery collection.
Yeah it’s expensive for what it is and I’d worry about the adapter sliding out of the Ryobi tool. If you watch the video, when inserted it doesn’t click into place and there’s no button tabs to lock it either.
DCA1820 lets you use newer Dewalt 20V batteries on the old style Dewalt 18V tools. 🙂
Thanks for spotting the typo. That’s what I meant to say lol.
Fixed it ?
You have to be careful using that adapter , I had a home made one and Milwaukee depends on the tool to shut off the battery at a low voltage state, not the battery itself like Ryobi where you can hook up to the terminals and not have to worry.
good observation
I would very much want one to adapt from Bosch Blue series to Ryobi, but I’ll be waiting until they get offered by Wish or Alibaba or something. Way too expensive from the Australian source.
There’s a similar design on Thingiverse for people with 3D printers to print their own adapter and assemble. See here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1677812
This looks like cheaper and better quality

definitely looks better quality, only drawback I can see is that the large wall in the back blocks access to Dewalt’s battery fuel gauge
What bothers me is there are no specs listed, or a good description of battery protection circuit etc. So close to something I want so so bad. Sucks that they missed the mechanical latch, I had not noticed that, and that would be a deal breaker
