Worx joins the attachment capable outdoor power equipment boom that other brands such as Ryobi, Ego, and Milwaukee have gone into with their own attachment capable cordless outdoor power tool. To get into the attachment capable system is a Worx 40V string trimmer with a crazy long name that goes by the name “WORX Nitro 40V Power Share Pro 15 in. Driveshare Attachment-Capable Grass Trimmer.” It’s 40 volts because it uses a pair of 20V max (18 actual volts) batteries in series to pump out 40V max (36 actual volts). The words Nitro and Pro let you know these are their upper range of tools with better features such as a brushless motor and better performance than their usual set of tools.
The string trimmer power base features a brushless motor with a split shaft design to make it accept attachment heads and has a variable speed trigger and eco mode. The grass trimmer head is included and has a 15″ cutting swath and dual lines using 0.095″ line. A 15″ cutting swath isn’t the best in class however near the top of the range but I do like the improved features such as dual 0.095″ line. Unlike other Worx string trimmers, users cannot install spool heads with pre-wound trimmer line and must wind the line manually. This is my preferred method as buying string trimmer line in bulk is a lot cheaper than buying spool heads with line installed. The only trade off is that you have to cut and wind the line yourself but is very easy to do. In fact, it’s super easy, barely an inconvenience! I didn’t see any mention of the string trimmer head being a bump feed or auto feed. Let’s hope it’s not auto feed and instead bump feed as it shouldn’t be considered a pro tool if it has an auto feed system which are not ideal. Worx says that their Nitro attachment capable string trimmer offers gas-like performance, so hopefully should be more powerful than their previous cordless string trimmers. I do like that this string trimmer doesn’t include training wheels that entry level brands often include to aid in edging to beginner users. This shows that this nitro string trimmer means business.
As far as additional attachment heads go that are sold separately, they also offer a 17″ hedge trimmer, 9″ brush cutter, 10″ pole saw, and lawn edger with 8″ blade.
Worx also introduces a new 20V Power Share 4ah battery that they call a “high capacity pro” battery. In 2021 a 4ah battery is a far cry from “high capacity” as plenty of other brands offer 18V and 20V batteries as high as 12ah in capacity. 4ah is one third of that so it shouldn’t really be called high capacity. If it was the year 2013, then it would make sense but not today. They consider it a “pro” battery because they are said to offer “improved power protection and run time through an intelligent battery management system with cell-cooling technology. Each battery’s cells are wrapped in thermoplastic material to dissipate heat and maximize power and performance.”
The Worx 40V Nitro string trimmer is priced at $329.99 as a kit WG186 with two 4.0ah 20V batteries, and 4a dual charger. It’s also available as a tool only WGWG186.9 for $219.99 and are covered by a 5 year limited warranty. Pricing for the attachment heads are shown below:
