Yesterday we learned that Ridgid is coming out with a brushless 18V compact hammer drill and impact driver here in the USA. Across the pond in Europe AEG, which is the Ridgid 18V equivalent, is offering a brushless 18V combi drill with a removable chuck. For us americans, a combi drill is a hammer drill and this is because hammer drills are essentially 2 tools in one a drill and a hammer drill hence the name combi. I suppose we would call it a combo drill instead of combi.
But anyways, enough english lessons, this combi drill is unique because it has a removable chuck system. On it’s own a removable chuck is nothing to brag about but what’s great about this chuck system is that you can drill holes with the 1/2″ chuck, then remove the 1/2″ chuck to expose a small 1/4″ hex bit holder. Now you have a compact screwdriver. You can also add a right angle attachment and now you have a right angle drill. The right angle attachment itself has a removable chuck so you can use regular drill bits with the chuck on and as a right angle screwdriver with the chuck off with its built in bit holder. If that weren’t cool enough, it also includes an offset adapter to drive screws in corners. So lets take a count, we have a drill/driver, hammer drill, compact screwdriver, right angle drill, right angle screwdriver, and offset screwdriver. That’s 6 tools in one!
Many AEG 18V power tools are exact replicas of Ridgid 18V power tools so we can only hope this AEG brushless 18V combi drill with removable chuck system makes it way here to the USA as a Ridgid branded power tool. It’s unsure if this will ever make its way here but so far we have yet to see similar removable chuck drills make it here. It could be the case were Europe and the rest of the world gets to keep some of the most interesting power tools to themselves.

Yes it does, removable heads on drills seems to be more common over in europe. Other brands including Fein and Milwaukee feature this type of system on select drills.
