Makita 18V Brushless Quick Shift Mode 4 Speed Impact Driver XDT20

Makita has focused much of their attention on their XGT 40V Max line of power tools and it seems like their main line, the 18V LXT line has taken a backseat in their R&D department. However it’s good to know they are still making new tools in their 18V line to keep existing users happy.

This new 18V impact driver is an interesting one. It’s got a lot of bells and whistles. For example, its got a brushless motor and 4 driving speeds, 4 impact force modes, what they call the “Quick-Shift mode” which finds the best balance of speed and torque for each application for more efficient fastening. These controls can be found on the bottom rear of the tool above the battery holder.

There’s also a button you can press above the trigger for quick mode switching / quick speed selection. There’s also a button to turn on/off the LED light. This is an electronic’s gadget geeks paradise!

It also has a true LED light ring in the front. Most impact drivers that have an LED light ring, usually just have three visible LED’s that together form a “light ring” however this has a literal light ring in the front for completely even diffused soft lighting. This is the superior form of lighting for an impact driver hands down.

It’s brushless motor has the power to work with 1,590 in-lbs of torque. This isn’t a class leading number by any means as the top impact drivers are 2,000 in-lbs or more but is a good middle ground number for the everyday task.

Another thing this model excels at is size, coming in at a very compact 4-1/2 inches in length. Not the shortest in today’s fierce competitive power tool market but comes very close.

This model should be available as early as December 2024 and will be priced at $234 as a baretool and $399 as a kit with 2x 5ah batteries, charger, and tool bag.
