Amazon now offers the ability to deliver your packages inside your car and is called Amazon Key In Car Delivery. This service is in addition to their other deliver methods and you can select this delivery method to have the delivery person place the item inside your vehicle. This service is exclusive to Amazon Prime members only and is free as part of your membership perks.
The way it works is you place your order and select Amazon Key as the delivery method and when the delivery person reaches your car, they get approval to open your vehicle and after it is confirmed they place your package inside your car. This is all done electronically without the use of physical keys and you need a compatible vehicle in order to receive this service. The service is compatible with most 2015 model year or newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, and Volvo vehicles with an active connected car service plan such as OnStar or Volvo On Call.
As of right now this new service is only available in select areas. I checked my area code and luckily for me it’s available however in order to take advantage of this service I would need a compatible car which I don’t have.
I will admit I find this new service a strange one. But seeing as how they offer regular deliver services to your door, inside your front door delivery option and their Amazon Locker, I can understand why they would add additional options. It also makes sense to use something like the in car delivery service for those times you know you won’t be home on the day of delivery so that your package isn’t out in the open ready to be stolen.
