Makita has announced a new 36V/40V Max backpack power supply with built in 1200 wh battery PDC1200A01 and a new 21″ brushless self propelled mower CML01 that’s designed to take full advantage of the new power supply just mentioned but in a new unique way. Both products are part of what Makita calls “ConnectX” which Makita says “is a run-time and power solution for professionals seeking a gas replacement.”

Makita ConnectX™ 1,200Wh Backpack Power Supply PDC1200A01
Back in March 2020 we learned about Makita’s then new PDC01 LXT 18V & X2 36V Portable Backpack Power Supply that offered users the ability to harness the power of up to four Makita 18V batteries to give additional runtime to Makita LXT 18V and X2 36V cordless power tools as well as connecting directly to special Makita cordless power tools that shared the backpacks unique connector. Fast forward to today and we have yet another Makita backpack power supply with the PDC1200A01 model. Unlike the PDC01 backpack power supply that was a housing for the user to insert their own batteries, the new PDC1200A01 is its own battery with a huge integrated 1200 wh battery! Just to get this into perspective, this is similar to just over eleven Makita 18V 6.0ah batteries! That’s a lot of runtime. The PDC1200A01 is basically a large battery unit with included backpack harness to carry on your back and the battery unit is detachable and can be directly mounted to select ConnectX products like the new ConnectX mower which we’ll cover below.
Besides being able to connect with other ConnectX products, this backpack power supply can be connected to X2 36V and the new 40V Max XGT cordless power tools using the appropriate dummy battery adaptors. The X2 dummy adaptor consists of two dummy 18V battery packs while the XGT dummy adaptor consists of a single 40V Max dummy battery pack. Since you can’t charge it with Makita battery adaptors, this backpack power supply includes its own AC power supply to charge it and it takes 360 minutes or 6 hours to fully charge. The Makita ConnectX™ 1,200Wh Backpack Power Supply PDC1200A01 will be available November 2021 according to Makita and is priced at the low low price of only $1379. (What I said about the “low” price was a joke but the price is real.)

Makita ConnectX Commercial 36V (18V X2) LXT 21” Self‐Propelled Lawn Mower CML01Z
Makita calls their new ConnectX lawn mower by this name: 36V (18V X2) LXT 21” Self‐Propelled Lawn Mower CML01 and I find it strange as is, it doesn’t have the ability to use Makita 18V batteries directly. In fact, it doesn’t even have a battery compartment like traditional battery powered mowers so I’m wondering if the reference in its title to X2 (18V x 2) is a typo? Instead it has a top mounting area that accepts the PDC1200A01 ConnectX 1200 wh power supply directly. The image shown above shows the power supply mounted on the unit and below we can see the new mower with no power supply attached. It can also be powered by any Makita backpack power supply even the PDC01 with a direct cable connection.
It’s very competitive with the top battery powered mowers as this Makita features a 21″ steel deck, a brushless motor, and offers the self propelled feature as well. Makita calls this model a commercial grade mower and I could only find it as a baretool at time of writing as model Makita CML01Z and is priced at $999 and without a battery pack making it far more expensive than other brands mowers and doesn’t even come with a battery pack and charger for the high price tag. Makita says this mower can run with 1200 wh power supply for about 3 hours.
It has a bag and has 3 in 1 capability for bagging, mulching, and side discharge. The self propelled feature can be turned on and has variable speed from 1.5-3 MPH. One feature I didn’t see were headlights which come in handy when mowing in the evening or early morning. It’s also stated to launch November 2021.
