Some might think this is Makita’s first battery powered lawn mower but the fact is that they already have one in the X2 line. The current model XML02Z uses two 18V Makita LXT batteries to power a 17 inch deck and cutting width using 36 volts. The new DLM461Z model in this article is also an X2 power tool using two 18V batteries to produce 36 volts however it does possess two upgrades – a brushless motor and a larger cutting width than the original. The brushless motor alone is a huge upgrade as it should provide longer runtime and possibly better performance. While the new model does offer a larger cutting width at 18 inches, it’s not a huge upgrade at one inch bigger and still a rather small cutting width compared to the competition. Both Dewalt and Ryobi both offer 36V/40V max mowers with 20 inch decks which means Makita’s newest cordless mower is behind the competition in terms of cutting width.

The build quality over the current model is a big upgrade as they ditch the all plastic build and replaced it with a heavy duty steel deck and Makita says that it has 4 swing back blades that have been designed to withstand harsh Australian conditions. So far this has only been spotted in Australia. No word on USA availability but I’ll keep you guys posted if it makes it’s way over here.

A big thanks to Cody Robertson for spotting this!

This is a terrible mower. It couldn’t even handle thin lawn and fully charged new battery only lasted 15-20mn on thin lawn with mulch option. When it gets to thicker patch of grass the motor stopped instead of cranking up as advertised.
