Back in December 2017 I wrote of a new Makita X2 brushless multi-function power head that would come out in spring 2018 and I found it that the new tool is now available and is called the Makita XUX01Z 18V X2 (36V) LXT Brushless Cordless Couple Shaft Power Head.
The new X2 power head can accept different attachments such as a straight string trimmer EM405MP, curved string trimmer ER400MP, brush cutter EM400MP, edger, 20″ straight hedge trimmer EN410MP, 20″ articulating hedge trimmer EN401MP, cultivator KR400MP, and 10″ pole saw EY401MP attachments. There’s also a 42″ extension shaft attachment LE400MP which makes sense for use with the pole saw and hedge trimmer attachment heads to reach up high.
The new XUX01Z Brushless Cordless Couple Shaft Power Head appears similar to the top half of their X2 brushless string trimmer and one would assume it’s based on that model but looking at it’s specs sheet it does not have the same internals as the new power head has 3 selectable speeds and a higher max RPM at 9,700 RPM. The new head is stronger as well as it has the power to run the new string trimmer attachment that has a large 17 inch cutting swath running double line. Just like the original X2 brushless string trimmer, the new power head also has a reverse mode to untangle the string trimmer head in the event it ever gets tangled. However I’m not sure how effective this feature would be on the other attachments like the hedge trimmer and pole saw.

What the heck is the difference between the em400mp and em405mp? Nice to say brush cutter/string trimmer, but all photos show are string trimmers. No where do I see a “brush cutter” attachment. Can’t find out on Makita site, and seems no where else. How about you guys? Anyone really know the difference? Pics? Photos? Anything?
Thank you, Max
The 405 is a string/brush cutter with optional grass blade. The 400 is curved string cutter. This is all on Makita’s website.
