Milwaukee M18 Cordless 5 Inch Random Orbit Sander 2648-20

A new Milwaukee M18 Cordless 5 Inch Random Orbit Sander 2648-20 has been spotted over at Home Depot.

Just like it’s TTI brother from Ridgid, it too has a variable speed dial and the option to use the included dust collection or a vacuum. Although instead of using a traditional dust bag, the Milwaukee M18 Cordless sander uses a plastic box container with a filter of course. Unlike the Ridgid cordless sander, the Milwaukee uses removable dust collection options that you have to add to use or remove to use the other unlike both options being built-in on the Ridgid.

As most of you may already have caught on by the omission of the word Fuel in the name, it is not a brushless sander. But in their defense I have not seen a cordless brushless random orbit sander up to this point. Brushless cordless belt sander yes but not in a random orbit model. However it would have been nice to a brushless sander not for added power as today’s cordless random orbit sanders are powerful enough but for added runtime as full speed sanding kills batteries quick. Milwaukee claims this sander will have a runtime for up to 30 minutes with a 3.0 ah battery but I’m certain that will most likely be at the lowest speed. They probably left out a brushless motor to keep the price point lower. Talking about price point, this new sander will retail for $99 which is more than the Ridgid 18V sander but more in line with Makita’s 18V sander pricing which is the same $99 also as a baretool.

Good to see Milwaukee coming out with more woodworking tools. I hope they come out with a cordless palm router, cordless belt sander, and even possibly a cordless biscuit joiner or better yet make a cordless version of Festool’s domino machine but without the crazy Festool price, that would be awesome!

A big thanks to Cody Robertson for spotting this!

Actually kobalt 24v tools has a brushless orbital sander in their lineup, in fact I think all of their tools are brushless at least so far they are
