This Lockbolt tool reminds me of a battery powered rivet tool and that’s because lockbolts are designed to mate two sheets of metal together which is the same basic purpose of a blind rivet. The M18 Fuel lockbolt tool even has a waste container on the back end just like you’ll find on their rivet tools. I had to do some research as to what a lockbolt was and it’s a two piece fastener with a pin and a collar. If my understanding of a lockbolt fastener is correct, the pin has ridges on it similar to threads on a screw except these ridges do not spiral up and down as a screw thread does. That’s because a lockbolt is not designed to be rotated to be tightened in one direction and untightened in the opposite direction, otherwise it would be no different than a screw and a nut. Instead the collar is pressed onto the pin as the pin is pulled, which forms a crimp on it. The pin has additional length to it that helps give it plenty of grip area to pull. Once the connection has been made, the excess of the pin breaks off and is collected in the waste container at the back of the tool. There is a Bobtail variation with a shorter pin with an end that doesn’t need to be broken off. Milwaukee’s M18 Fuel lockbolt tool is said to work up to 50% faster than lockbolt tools. Most lockbolt tools are pneumatic and since Milwaukee’s battery powered model is cordless, there are no hoses to get in the way, making the tool more portable. The Milwaukee M18 Fuel lockbolt can install up to 1,200 1/4” aluminum Huck Magna-Grip lockbolts with a 5.0ah battery. ONE-KEY functionality give the tool the ability to track, manage, and secure the lockbolt tool. The M18 Fuel lockbolt tool is also versatile because it can install Magna-Grip®, C6L, C120L, Bobtail®, Hucktainer® lockbolts, and even blind rivets when paired with the appropriate adapter. The blind rivet adapter gives it the ability to install 3/16”, 7/32”, 1/4”, and 9/32” aluminum, steel, and stainless-steel blind rivets. This means that you wont need separate tools for each of the supported fasteners. One tool can do it all.
