Milwaukee has announced a new cordless M18 orbital 1/4″ sheet sander model 2649-20 that they say offers the lowest vibrations and best dust collection in its class.

The Milwaukee M18 1/4″ sheet sander uses quarter sheets that you buy pre cut or cut yourself from larger sheets and they clamp down in place. Unlike random orbit sanders which use a round pad that spins as it orbits, this model doesn’t spin but just orbits or vibrates in place as you move the sander to and fro across the work surface. It provides variable speeds of 11,000 all the way up to 13,000 orbits per minute and Milwaukee says that it provides a stain ready orbital finish. This is good to know as any scratch marks will easily be visible when stain is applied if not sanded properly.
It also has a proper dust collection system as it sucks dust from holes in the sand paper pad. Of course, regular sand paper sheets don’t have holes in them so Milwaukee provides a punch plate to properly punch out the holes needed for dust extraction. Dust is collected via the onboard dust bag and you can also remove the dust bag and hook up a vacuum via the supplied universal vac adapter. Milwaukee claims that this sander offers the best dust collection in its class and also has the least vibrations as well which is good as you don’t want too much vibration making your hands and arms all tingly afterwards as that’s no bueno.
The new M18 orbital 1/4″ sheet sander will launch in June 2022 for $119.00 as a baretool.
