New Makita 18V Compact Drill & Impact driver and batteries with Fuel Gauge

Makita_XFD10R_Product_Shot_500Makita_XDT11R_Product_Shot_500The past several weeks, Makita has been releasing all sorts of new power tools with a few new lights, and some brushless cordless tools and now I have found out they’re coming out with a new 18V 1/2″ compact drill (XFD10R) and a new 18V impact driver (XDT11R). Both of these new 18V cordless power tools come as individual kits bundled with a hard case, charger, and two 2.0 ah batteries.

The drill and impact driver are both brushed models and seem to be placed in the compact segment. They both offer updated designs and specs. Although torque numbers are similar to their white 18V models, they both feature increased RPM’s with the same torque 480 in-lbs for the drill and a slight bump in torque 1,460 in-lbs on the impact driver up from 1,420. Along with the updated designs on both impact and drill, they are also a bit more compact than the white models and both feature dual led lights which can be seen on most of their newest cordless power tools and they also both feature XPT (Extreme Protection Technology) for increased dust and water resistance.

Built in fuel gauges have long been lacking on all Makita batteries and most of their cordless power tools. This has always been a negative for me and I’m sure plenty of users as not only is it convenient to check your battery status but at times can be essential for efficient productivity. Before now, their best attempt at fuel gauges was to implement them on select power tools but then it became a hassle if users had multiple batteries and needed to check numerous batteries. Users would be forced to swap out batteries to check fuel status, this has been a bit of annoyance for me actually. But now it’s good to see Makita got with the times and included fuel gauges on their battery packs. This is a great move forward.

Back to the drill and impact driver, it seems to me that these might be replacing the white models XFD04CW and XDT01CW as the new drill and impact driver are priced the same as the white models at $169 each. Now don’t quote me on that, although the $169 price is correct at the time of writing, I am not sure if these will be replacing the current white models or if they are to be sold alongside them. It just wouldn’t make sense to me to offer both models if they are priced the same and the new models are slightly better featured, and better equipped for the same price.
