Ridgid 12V Palm Impact Screwdriver with Push To Drive Tech – Video Review

In this Video Review brought to you from the Tool Craze YouTube channel, I review and go over Ridgid’s fresh creation, the 12V Palm Impact Screwdriver  R8224K.

What’s cool about this new impact screwdriver is that it fits in the palm of your hand, hence the name palm impact screwdriver. Not only does it fit in your palm but this is the way you grip it, by placing it in your palm and grip the tool just as you would a palm nailer, but it’s not a nailer, it’s an impact driver.

It has a very compact shape overall, and is a bit more compact than traditional 12V impact drivers and is designed to fit into tighter spaces. But it’s main feature is it’s Push To Drive ability where instead of operating a trigger like you would normally do on an impact driver, you push the impact driver into the screw to drive it. Get it? Push to drive, simple.

Check out the video above for my complete thoughts on it’s features and performance and for a quickie demonstration of it in action.

Likes:

  • Cool, fresh, new design
  • I liked the push to drive operation
  • works great as a screwdriver for driving machine screws for small furniture, tool assembly
  • built in light to illuminate dark areas
  • built in battery fuel gauge
  • Ridgid’s famous limited lifetime warranty

Dislikes:

  • low 400 in-lbs torque limits it’s usefullness
  • slow power to drive screws into wood, even if pre-drilled
  • although it has a compact low profile front to back length, when gripped, your hand adds to it’s overall length limiting it’s compact usefulness
  • bundled with only one battery means that you can’t work while the battery is down and charging

Overall Verdict:

It’s a great concept, I love the fresh new design with it’s push to drive feature and it works great as a screwdriver. But it’s low performance limit’s it’s usefulness for anything else and is not compact enough for me to choose this over a regular pro 12V impact driver, which easily has more power. If you’re looking for something truly compact with similar performance, it might be a better choice to go with a 12V right angle impact driver such as Ridgid’s own 12V Job Max cordless power tool with right angle head.

Get it if you like to own the latest tech and gizmos. you want a tool with a “WOW” & “COOL” factor, you want to own a tool none of your buddies have at the moment, and plan on only using this tool to install and remove machine screws for assembly purposes.
