Ryobi 18V Compact Brushless 6″ Pruning Chainsaw

Ryobi 18V Compact Brushless 6" Pruning Chainsaw

Are you on the Ryobi 18V system and like the Milwaukee M12 & M18 Hatchet mini chainsaws? Do you wish Ryobi would come out with something similar? Well wait no more as Ryobi has done just that with their latest 18V 6″ pruning chainsaw. This is thanks to Ryobi and Milwaukee being under the TTI umbrella and can share ideas at times.

Much like the Milwaukee Hatchet, this Ryobi is also a mini one handed chainsaw.

Ryobi 18V Compact Brushless 6″ Pruning Chainsaw – Features

This Ryobi features a 6 inch bar and chain which is smaller than the one found on the M18 Hatchet. And is more akin to the M12 Hatchet with its 6″ bar. The 6″ bar and small size makes it suited for smaller limbs and branches. Whereas a larger chainsaw would be overkill and cumbersome to use on smaller stuff.

The top section of the motor is also designed to place your other hand for added downward force and control.

While the Milwaukee Hatchets have an added hand guard built above the motor section. This is not found on the Ryobi. This is because Ryobi added a guard directly over the bar and chain.

The guard has greater coverage on the left side than it does on the right. This means that the saw is designed with right handers in mind. With their right hand operating the trigger and the left hand resting on top of the motor. This aids to the greatest amount of safety. More so than left handed use.

On the right side of the saw is where you’ll find the tool-less chain tensioning system. I don’t see a oil tank – that’s because there isn’t one. Ryobi says it uses an oil-free design. I’m not sure this is a good idea as a lot of friction is made between a bar and chain. There’s a good reason why chainsaws use oil to lubricate their bar and chains. To reduce the friction caused between them. Maybe a smaller bar and chain negates the need for oil? Only time will tell.

EDIT 1/20/23:

I reached out to Ryobi over my concern over their oil-free design. I asked them what reassurance does Ryobi provide that this chainsaw will not run into problems because of not using oil. Below is their reply:

We have run extensive tests to ensure the bar will not overheat due to the reduced chain speed and increased torque.

Thank you Ryobi for the quick answer to this question! It appears their reasoning for not using oil lubrication is based on reduced chain speed.

Ryobi 18V Compact Brushless 6″ Pruning Chainsaw – Battery Cordless

Being a cordless battery powered chainsaw, you no longer have to deal with the hassle of gas. This means no more pull starting, fumes, loud motor, engine maintenance, and the list goes on. Just pop in a fresh battery and pull the trigger and get to work cutting.
