Ryobi 18V Brushless Reciprocating Saw P517 Spotted – Now includes Orbital Action

Dave Greer wrote in and again spotted another new brushless 18V tool from Ryobi, this time a brushless reciprocating saw model P517.

Just like the previous tool spotted which was the brushless Ryobi impact driver, the new brushless reciprocating saw was also spotted in the USA Ryobi website and only their manual was listed so no actual pictures of full list of specs. The manual only shows a diagram drawing of the saw and a few specs.

What I can gather from the manual about the new Ryobi 18V brushless reciprocating saw P517 is this:

  • same 1-1/8″ stroke length but more strokes per minute (3,200 SPM) vs brushed P516 model
  • orbital action although manual does not state how many settings
  • keyless blade changes
  • appears to have the anti-vibe handle of previous models based on the picture
  • adjustable shoe to use different parts of the blade uses a hex key to make changes
  • hex key is included and stores in the handle
  • trigger and styling look to be based on the USA spec brushless Ryobi hammer drill

These are nice updates to the current brushed model and the two biggest features are the brushless motor that probably provides more power since it can now handle more SPM’s @ 3,200, and the orbital action seems to be new to cordless Ryobi recip saws. Actually you don’t see orbital action on many cordless models, although newer cordless models are picking up the feature such as Ridgid’s GenX5 18V recip saw and Bosch’s new brushless 18V recip saw.

I like the keyless blade change system that Ryobi uses on their recip saw as it requires a flip up on the side tab instead of having to fumble inside the shoe and twist the blade holder. Although it would be nice if they had made adjusting the length of the shoe keyless also which requires a hex key.

I’m not sure when this will be out but since it did appear on the USA Ryobi site briefly before being pulled down, I would assume it will be out soon.
