Ryobi Technically has had a 40V vacuum before but it’s not what you think of when you think of a vacuum. It’s more of a blower with the ability to reverse the airflow to suck rather than blow and vacuum up leaves and store them with the included bag. It’s a purpose built machine that you would never think of to vacuum your home or car upholstery. The Ryobi 40V 10 gallon wet dry vacuum is their first standalone 40 volt vacuum to be used as a general purpose vacuum. Also being a wet dry vacuum or as they layman would call a “Shop Vac”, this Ryobi is safe to use to suck up liquids and spills as well.

As you can see in the image above, it looks like a traditional wet dry vac, and looks very similar to a Ridgid vac which is also a Home Depot exclusive and has ties with TTI who makes several Ryobi and Ridgid products, so no surprise of the Ridgid resemblance. Of course being a Ryobi, its drum is highlighter green and just like a Ridgid vac, it has four 360 castors and the ability to store accessories atop the castors which provides built in storage for the included crevice tool, floor nozzle, and extension wands.

The top of the unit holds the large 40V battery and fits in a sealed compartment to protect the battery from dust and water intrusion. A clear frosted lid allows you to see if a battery is installed. A 10 gallon capacity makes it one of the largest if not the largest battery powered wet dry vacuum on the market. At least as far as I’m concerned. Ryobi states that this vacuum has “corded” performance. It doesn’t plug into an AC outlet but what that means is that it has performance similar to a plug in vacuum. In fact, it’s rated for a strong 80 CFM of suction. That’s pretty strong for a cordless vacuum however it’s actually on par with Ryobi’s 18 volt 6 gallon wet dry vac with the same performance. I was expecting more performance seeing as Ryobi was able to achieve 80 CFM with 18 volts, I’d assume they could do better with 40 volts. But don’t let that take away from the fact that 80 CFM is still very strong. Just to give you an idea of how strong that is, the Ridgid 9 Gal. 4.25-Peak HP NXT vacuum is rated at 76 CFM and this Ryobi 40V is slightly stronger in the suction department. Though it’s no more powerful than their 18V 6 gallon model, you do get the benefit of considerably better runtime since most 40V batteries have far more watt hours of capacity than your typical 18 volt batteries. Ryobi says this new 40V vacuum can achieve up to 60 minutes of runtime with a 40V 6ah battery which is very good if you ask me. It doesn’t offer a brushless motor but I’m sure that you could expect even better runtime if it did. The included hose is an 8 foot hose of 1-7/8 diameter similar to a corded vac of its size which is larger than a 1-1/4″ hose. Ryobi says that it operates at 68 decibels making it a quieter option. It includes a pleated filter for dry use and a foam filter for wet use.

Ryobi states it will be available Spring 2022 and will be priced at $199 as a baretool meaning that for two Benjamins, you’ll still need to spend more cash to add a separate battery and charger to run this, and they have to be 40V batteries to function. No, it won’t work with your Ryobi 18V batteries.

My Thoughts:

I think this new 40V vacuum is a great addition to their Ryobi 40 volt line and the benefits of the larger batteries mean that runtime will be good for regular use instead of spot pickups. The high price as a baretool might scare some people away especially when you consider that similar corded vacs are far cheaper and cost less than $100. It might make more sense to pick one up if you are already invested in the Ryobi 40V system or really need a large and powerful cordless vacuum with great runtime.
