Toro is coming out with a new cordless outdoor power tool line featuring a 40V battery at the heart of the system. The new 40V line will be called Toro PowerPlex.
The new Toro PowerPlex 40V line will feature 5 new power tools including a brushless blower, brushless chainsaw, brushed motor hedge trimmer, and two string trimmers with a brushed motor 13 inch model and a 14″ brushless model.
The 40V line features two batteries a 2.5ah and a 5.0 for compact size or for longer runtime. The charge times are mid range as well at 60 minutes and 120 minutes to charge respectively which makes them not the fastest but not the slowest either.
This is a midrange cordless system which sits above your typical 18V/20V cordless power tools and just below more powerful 56V power tool lines. Just like most new cordless power tool systems, Toro’s system uses brushless motors on most of their tools with the exception of their hedge trimmer and one string trimmer. The one string trimmer is a lower priced option since they do offer a brushless model with larger capacity. As far as the hedge trimmer is concerned, it’s not out of the ordinary that they went with a brushed motor since many manufactures also use brushed motors for their cordless hedge trimmers.
Pricing sits just below 56V+ cordless systems and most tools in this line are priced below $200 at around $179 in kit form with the exception of the chainsaw which is $250 in kit form. This makes this 40V system a budget conscious option for those looking to spend less than higher priced systems.
All tools in this system are about midrange but the standout power tool in my opinion is the blower which features some nice performance stats of 480 CFM’s at 150 MPH. This makes it better than Ego’s first 56V blower which is at a higher voltage. The rest of the tools are in line with what you’d expect from 40V tools.
The lineup has a decent number of outdoor tools, enough to get you out there although it’s missing one key power tool the mower to make it a complete set. This will force users to either use a mower from another cordless line or use a gasoline powered one.
