3 New Makita X2 36V Brushless Lawn Mowers in 21″ & 18″ XML06, XML07, XML08

Last month in March, Makita announced three new premium battery powered mowers with the XML06, XML07, XML08 models of which are part of the X2 line of 18V tools that use 2 batteries together to pump out 36V. The XML06 offers an 18″ cutting width and is self propelled. Both the XML07 and XML08 offer a 21″ cutting width with the XML08 model offering the self propelled feature.

Makita is not new to cordless battery powered mowers as they have a few X2 36V mowers that run on two 18V batteries however what makes these three models unique is that they have a 4 battery compartment. Many of you regular readers may remember the article I wrote in September 2019 about the DLM533 that has a 4 battery bay as well. Well these three new mowers appear to be the USA variants of the one we saw back in September and now we have actual specs.

So the way the 4 battery bay compartment works is that only two batteries are used at any given time hence it’s still a 36 volt tool. This mean there’s one set in use while the other await their turn. Unfortunately they don’t switch over automatically but instead require the user to stop and lift the battery compartment and manually turn a knob to select the other set. I’d prefer it if the switch between sets was automated. The positive though is that you basically have an extra set on you at all times, if you have 4 batteries in the compartment bay, and you don’t need to run back to the garage or truck to get another set and you don’t have to swap out the sets, just turn a knob to select the other set instead.

The battery compartment also features a red key that needs to be inserted to operate, just like your automobile. I’m not a big fan of these as I’m used to battery powered power tools to run on command without keys however this might be a useful feature for those that run a landscaping business by deterring theft as only the operator with key can use.

As far as runtime is concerned, the XML06 can cut up to 2/5 acre when using 4 batteries and the XML07 and XML08 can up to 1/2 acre when using 4 batteries. Makita says all three mowers have an 120mm motor, the largest brushless motor they have and my guess as to why the smaller XML06 gets slightly less runtime would be that it uses a smaller cutting width which means it cuts less per pass than the larger models.

All three offer very nice premium features for battery powered mowers with actual steel decks instead of plastic decks you’ll usually find on battery powered mowers. The wheels on these mowers are large and should make it easy to operate the mower.

The XML08 & XML07 models are three in one mowers meaning they can mulch, side discharge and bag while the smaller XML06 is a 2 in 1 mower as it can mulch and bag but not side discharge.

All three models will be available May 2020.

  • LAWRENCE LINTNER says:

Makita needs to realize the need for more power in mowers. They have four ports for batteries, but use only two at a time. They need to step up to 72v/80v power, and use all four ports active/live, or at least provide that option.

    • Mitch says:

More voltage doesn’t mean more power necessarily. It depends on how the armature is wired. But yes using all 4 batteries at once will give more power. But then your batteries die and you have to wait for all 4 to charge. Using existing power tool batteries makes sense for them.
