Last month we learned that Makita introduced their first 12V outdoor power tool for their newer 12V CXT lineup and that new tool back then was a new Makita 12V grass shear model MU04Z which you can read all about by clicking here. I stumbled across a new Makita 12V CXT outdoor power tool and this time around it’s a cordless 12V hedge trimmer model HU06Z .

While the Makita 12V grass shears only served as a grass shear, the tool design could have allowed for the ability to remove the grass shears and replace the blade with a hedge trimmer blade. This is something Makita could have easily done as other brands have done this such as Ryobi but rather it seems their plan all along was to have the same tool be split up into two different model numbers each with the ability to only accept a different blade. That’s right, the physical tool body is the same on both models except for the blade they use and most likely share the same internals.

Whether you like or dislike the fact that Makita sells the same body as two different tools for different uses, I still like that they have a cordless 12V hedge trimmer as more options are always great. Also while not an overly exciting tool, I get excited about thinking about what sorts of other 12V outdoor yard tools they can come up with next. Maybe we’ll finally see them reintroduce their older 12V chainsaw from many 12V generations ago, it may be long forgotten but I still hope for the day they revive it as a CXT tool.

Anyways going to the Makita 12V CXT hedge trimmers specs, it will have a 7-7/8″ blade which is not anywhere near what we can find on 18V but is decent enough on 12V for the moment. It’s probably small for one handed use although there’s a little knob your second hand can grab onto for two handed trimming. It also comes with a handy removable chip receiver attachment which retains clippings for easier clean up, not bad!

It’s available now and comes with an average price of around $77.99 and it comes as a baretool meaning no battery or charger.
