Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1/2″ High Torque Impact Wrench – Features

Last year Milwaukee debuted their Gen 2 M18 Fuel high torque impact wrenches with up to 1,400 ft-lbs of nut busting torque. They weren’t alone with other brands joining the high torque fun so Milwaukee decided to push the envelope once again. This time with the Gen 3 2023 models with up to 1,600 ft-lbs of nut busting torque! Take a moment to let that sink in.

There are two new M18 Fuel 1/2″ high torque impact wrench models this year with a friction ring (shown above) and pin detent model shown below. Only the friction ring model puts out up to 1,600 ft-lbs of nut busting torque and 1,200 ft-lbs of fastening torque. That’s when you pair it with Milwaukee’s M18 Red Lithium Forge batteries. If you pair them with their standard XC 5.0ah battery, you can expect up to 1,500 and 1,100 of nut busting and fastening ft-lbs torque respectively.

The pin detent model shown above is a slightly different beast to the friction ring model. Besides the difference in anvil, it also offers less torque with 1,100 and 900 ft-lbs of nut busting and fastening torque. It also offers a lanyard loop on top of the gearcase for drop protection. Though the nut busting torque number is the same as the Gen 2 model, the fastening torque does go up by 150 ft-lbs.

Both models besides offering more torque* also shrink in length. The friction ring model is now 7.6 inches and the pin detent model is now 7.1 inches in length. This makes them a bit more compact than their Gen 2 models. This allows them to fit into tighter spaces than before with the pin detent model taking the lead in this aspect.

I also like that Milwaukee finally embraced the tri-beam triple LED light system at the head of the tool. This shows that they listen to constructive criticism. Triple LED’s at the front of the tool is one of the best lighting systems on any impact tool for the least amount of shadows compared to single lights. The only way to improve is a solid ring of light. The front of the tool head also has rubber overmolding for added protection. You can even go beyond this and buy an optional boot to protect the entire upper section of the tool.
