Ridgid 18V 4ah Max Output EXP Tabless Battery AC840041 – Features

Ridgid 18V 4ah Max Output EXP Tabless Battery

4ah batteries are nothing new, so what makes this new battery interesting? Ridgid has employed the larger more advanced 21700 cells inside this battery and they are tabless cells. Tabless cells are said to feature more efficient energy transfer for improved power delivery. Ridgid says that while regular lithium ion cell usually use one or two internal tabs to transfer energy, these tabless cell construction maximises the pathways for energy transfer. This is said to deliver 3x more power in a compact size, optimise performance in high demand applications, and helps run cooler.

Ridgid touts that this tech allows for a more “compact” battery and as you can see above, this is a 4ah battery with only 5 cells. No doubt this makes it more compact than if it were made with 10 cells.

Now let’s move on to their claim of 3x more power in a compact size claim. Below we’ll find three charts in which this new “compact” 4ah battery outperforms many of their other batteries with faster performance times as you’ll see.

  • Delivers more than 2X faster cutting vs the 4.0Ah Lithium-Ion Battery with the 18V Brushless 7-1/4 in. Rear Handle Circular Saw through 3X stacked ¾” OSB.

  • Drills 40% faster with 3 holes in just 10 seconds with a 2-9/16 in. self-feed bit in HIGH SPEED using an 18V Brushless 1/2 in. High Torque Hammer Drill/Driver through 2×8 yellow pine.

  • Delivers over 70% faster cutting vs the 4.0Ah Lithium-Ion Battery with the 18V Brushless Reciprocating Saw through 2×10 yellow pine with a 10lb. weight attached.

What I find interesting is that all the other batteries in their charts are at least 10 cell batteries and yet this “compact” 5 cell battery provides more performance for faster work completed. It even beats out the largest 8ah battery which comes in a close second in all the tests. I also want to mention that their MAX OUTPUT EXP 12ah battery wasn’t in the comparison which is too bad as it would be very interesting to know which offers better performance, the 12ah or new tabless 4ah, and by how much?

Ridgid keeps throwing the word “compact” in their marketing regarding this new 4ah tabless battery. You’ll find it in the image above in the lower left. There you can see that it is significantly larger than the other compact 5 cell 2ah batteries. It is taller and has a larger footprint, notably longer for sure. It is shorter in height than the other 4ah and 6ah batteries however not by much. In fact, it is longer with a larger footprint than the other 4ah and 6ah batteries. The footprint is similar in size to the 8ah and 12ah battery. Though to its credit, the new 4ah tabless battery is shorter in height than the 8ah and 12ah battery, so when you compare it to those two, it is the more “compact” version of the three thanks to it having less cells.
