Ryobi Cordless Magnifying Light And 18V & 12V Rotary Tools

Following the recent Ryobi announcements to expand their 18V and 40V lines, they have what some of those new cordless tools are. There are several cordless 18V rotary tools announced along with a 12V model. Also as part of the 18V line is a new magnifying LED clamp light. All are stated to launch Spring 2022.

Ryobi 12V Rotary Tool Kit TVM01

We’ll start the list off with the 12V rotary tool kit. While Ryobi had an actual cordless 12 volt drill power tool with interchangeable battery before, the new 12 volt rotary tool is a fully standalone unit with built in internal lithium battery. This means that you can’t swap out batteries in a pinch like you can with their 18V tools. As for the tool itself, it’s on the compact side for a cordless 12V rotary tool. It has a variable speed dial so you can dial in the RPM’s from 5000-35,000 no-load, and has what Ryobi calls a quick change collet that’s said to be 4 times faster to change bits. It still requires a wrench so it’s not tool free to change accessories.

It’s priced at $99 as a kit with USB charge cable with 35 accessories, 3 attachments, wrench, accessory storage case. At its price point, it puts it squarely against the Dremel 12V model which is priced the same and also comes with a bundle of 30 accessories however the Dremel model is backed up by the Dremel name and brand, who is known for rotary tools. In fact, there are people that would assume a rotary tool is called a Dremel, just the same as how many people call all circular saws “Skilsaw” or all reciprocating saws “Sawzall” when in fact they are just brands or names just like Kleenex is a brand that makes tissues. The Dremel 12V model also has interchangeable 12 volt batteries. For not a little bit more, you can get sister brand Milwaukee’s M12 rotary tool kit for $119 which opens up to Milwaukee’s extensive 12 volt ecosystem. Ryobi even offers their own cordless 18V rotary tool with battery kit for less at $79 as a kit (more on this model below). At $99, 12V Ryobi is going up against some tough competition especially considering the integrated battery downside. They might turn more heads if they lower the price point.

The upside to this 12V rotary tool is that the tool is self contained and compact and the entire tool can fit in your hands whereas the models below are a two piece design with the tool that’s tethered to a base station. This makes their 12V option the one to get if you want one that can go anywhere and doesn’t have a cord to tie you down.

  • Power to cut, grind & sand
  • Greater control with variable speed dial
  • Lightweight and ergonomic design
  • Quick-change collet for fast and easy accessory changes
  • Integrated hanger
  • 3-year manufacturer’s warranty
  • Includes: (1)12V Rotary Tool, 35 accessories, 3 attachments, wrench, accessory storage case, USB cable, and operator’s manual

Ryobi 18V One+ HP Brushless Rotary Tool Kit PBLRT01K1

The Ryobi 18V One+ HP Brushless Rotary Tool Kit PBLRT01K1 is their flagship rotary tool with a brushless motor. Like the rest of their 18 volt rotary tools, it consists of a base station that houses the motor and a flexible driveshaft that powers the tool. This keeps the actual tool itself smaller and lighter than a single piece design like the 12V model however at the cost of being tethered to a base station. Ryobi could make the tool a single one piece design however the 18V battery pack would make it too bulky and unwieldy so a tethered design makes more sense for 18V. With this brushless model sitting atop their rotary tool line, Ryobi says this is the one that’s designed to live up to professional expectations. It also helps that the actual rotary tool itself offers aluminum construction which also differentiates it from the rest of Ryobi’s rotary tools. It also comes with a foot pedal for easier handsfree speed control but you can always use the onboard power and variable speed dial as well. Variable speeds are 1,000 to 25,000 Rated RPM and also has the quick release collet found on the 12V model.

This model aint cheap as it comes in at $179 and thankfully it’s a kit with 40 accessories, foot pedal, accessory storage case, wrench, 2 Ah ONE+ battery, and charger.

  • 18V ONE+™ HP Technology delivers longer runtime and 2X more power under load for corded-like performance

RYOBI™ 18V ONE+™ ROTARY TOOL STATION (TOOL ONLY) PCL480B

This model looks very familiar to their original 18V rotary tool station model P460 but with a few exterior changes. For example the dial and on/off switch have been swapped similar to how american and UK vehicles have the steering wheels on opposite sides. This newer model also looks like it’s been shortened in front to back length ever so slightly as well. Otherwise it’s very similar to the P460 model. Specwise, the new model ups the RPM’s now to 35,000 top speed vs 34,000 on the original so it seems there are some underhood improvements as well. This model features the motor on the base station and a flexible driveshaft that powers the tool. The base station also acts as an accessory holder for onboard storage which is a clever design. It also features their quick-change collet.

The price goes up on this model and is now $99 as a baretool with 35 accessories and accessory storage case which is up from the $89 kit price with battery and charger bundle when I wrote about the original back in March 2019 almost 3 years ago but everything is going up in price thanks to the ongoing pandemic, supply shortages, and inflation.

  • Cordless power and portability
  • Quietest rotary tool in its class
  • Variable speed dial from 5,000 – 35,000 Rated RPM for enhanced performance for any application
  • Durable 36″ flexible shaft pen design for ultimate precision and comfort
  • On-board accessory storage for convenience while working
  • Quick-change collet for fast and easy accessory changes
  • Added control with foot pedal capability (not included)

RYOBI 18V ONE+ PRECISION CRAFT ROTARY TOOL KIT PRT100K1

This is their budget friendly more affordable model and it’s actually not a new model at all as it’s the same model number as the PRT100B from back in October 2020. It shares the same basic model number of PRT100 with B for baretool and K1 being a kit form with battery and charger so not a new model at all. The only thing that changes is that it now has their quick-change collet and the K1 kit comes with the newer 2.0ah batteries priced at $79.99. Feature-wise, the base station has onboard bit storage and unlike the other 18V models, the base doesn’t house the motor and foregoes the driveshaft and instead has the motor on the tool itself. It’s still tethered to the base but all the cable does is provide electricity to power the tool and thus makes the cord smaller, lighter, and more flexible. This of course increases the size and weight of the tool but as you can see it’s not that much bigger. It still provides a variable speed dial.

  • Ideal for light-duty hobby and craft projects
  • Accurate control with 5 variable speeds
  • Cordless convenience for ultimate portability
  • Readily available accessories with onboard bit storage
  • Quick-change collet for fast and easy accessory changes
  • 3-year manufacturer’s warranty
  • Includes: (1) PRT100 18V ONE+™ Precision Craft Rotary Tool, 15 accessories, wrench, 2Ah ONE+ battery, charger and operator’s manuals.

The base is similar to their 18V clamp fan and can clamp onto the edge of your desk or the arm of a chair. The integrated light provides over 500 lumens of brightness and has a low setting of 250 lumens and can run for over 20 hours on low with a 4.0ah battery. It is priced at $39.97 as a baretool.
