New high capacity batteries have been announced, they are the Ryobi 18V 8ah and 12ah Battery. Let’s check them both out below.

Common Features:
Featuring Premium 21700 Cells
Both batteries feature premium 21700 cells. These are an upgrade over the traditional 18650 cells. Ryobi says you can expect up to 40% more power delivery with these new batteries thanks to these new cells. This is in addition to the added runtime thanks to the added capacity.
Because 21700 cells are larger than 18650 cells, these new 8ah and 12ah batteries are also physically larger than other Ryobi batteries. This can be seen in the above image with the new 8ah and 12ah batteries on the bottom right. As you can see, they are larger and taller than previous batteries.
Cool-Core Pro Heat Management System
Both models feature what Ryobi calls their Cool-Core Pro heat management system. They use laser welded cell straps and upgraded heat sinks to reduce the overall temperature of each battery when in use. This helps with performance, allowing the battery to run up to 30% cooler, and live 50% longer during aggressive applications according to Ryobi.
The exteriors have durable overmolding to protect from abuse in the jobsite and also features a robust design with anti-vibration tech to increase the durability.
Like most other Ryobi batteries, they feature LED fuel gauges and quick release battery latches.
Availability
Expect both batteries to be available August 2023.
Ryobi 18V 8ah High Performance Battery PBP1008
Ryobi says you can expect up to 8x more runtime with this battery. Although they don’t mention compared to what, so it’s a very vague marketing statement. They do mention however that you can get over 300 cross cuts through 2×6 yellow pine when used with the Ryobi 18V HP brushless 7-1/4″ circular saw. Over 24 hours of continuous runtime with the Ryobi 18V Fan.
8 ah means 8 amp hours. Amp hours is a measurement of battery capacity not power output. For some easy math comparisons, this 8ah battery will give you twice the runtime as compared to a 4ah battery. 4x the runtime compared to a 2ah battery. Expect a third more runtime than a 6ah battery and so forth.
It will be available August 2023 for $179 each.

Ryobi 18V 12ah High Performance Battery PBP1012
Ryobi says you can expect up to 10x more runtime with this battery. Although they don’t mention compared to what, so it’s a very vague marketing statement. They do mention however that you can get over 900 cross cuts through 3-1/4″ baseboard when used with the Ryobi 18V HP brushless 10″ sliding compound miter saw.
12 ah means 12 amp hours. Amp hours is a measurement of battery capacity not power output. For some easy math comparisons, this 12ah battery will give you twice the runtime as compared to a 6ah battery. 4x the runtime compared to a 3ah battery. 6x the runtime compared to a 2ah battery. 8x the runtime compared to a 1.5ah battery. Expect 50% more runtime than the 8ah battery and so forth.
A Look Inside:
Ryobi gave us a glimpse of the inside of the 12ah battery. There we can see there are a total of 15 individual 21700 cells inside. They are set up in 5 columns of 3 cells each. We can also see that the columns are staggered in height which means they are taller than if they weren’t staggered. But staggering them helps them so they are not so long front to back and so can keep a similar footprint to other Ryobi 18V batteries.
