Gen II Ryobi 18V HP Brushless Multitool – Uses
This tool is known as an oscillating multitool, or just multitool for short. It oscillates blades side to side quickly to provide cutting action. They are good tools for beginners to use as they are relatively safe to use. The chance of a blade cutting skin is very low, and in most cases the skin will just vibrate along with the blade and not get cut (however don’t try this at home).
Multitools are tools that are jack of all trades type of tools that can do many things well but a master of none. It can cut a variety of materials such as wood, plaster, drywall, metal, and plastics to name a few with the right blade of course. It’s a great tool for making flush cuts such as cutting nails that stick out flush with the material they’re sunk in.
One of my favorite uses for multitools is their ability to be used for cutting door jambs for flooring installations. This allows you to remove enough material in the door jamb to place part of flooring material such as tile or hardwood or laminate planks underneath the door jamb for a professional look rather than cutting the flooring to fit around the door jamb.
Gen II Ryobi 18V HP Brushless Multitool – Uses Continued
Another excellent use for multitools is for making plunge cuts. This gives them the ability to cut in the middle of material without the need to make pilot holes and use two separate tools. This comes in handy for plunge cutting out square holes to fit electrical boxes inside drywall. This is especially handy for new jobs in oldwork and easier than using a jab saw as the tool does most of the work for you. Though a jab saw might be just as fast or faster but requires 100% elbow grease.
Multitools are also good for sanding as the tool mount accepts sanding pads. Though the triangular sanding pad is on the small side, a full size stand alone sander would provide more coverage at a faster rate, the small sanding pads on multitools such as this one make it better suited for detail sanding where it can fit in tighter spaces and crevices. The triangular shape also allows it to fit inside corners.
Gen II Ryobi 18V HP Brushless Multitool – Features
This cordless multitool runs on Ryobi’s popular 18V batteries. It features a brushless motor that Ryobi says offers best in class power that’s said to offer 80% faster cutting and 2.5x more cuts than their PBLMT50 model. It uses a trigger to operate and a variable speed dial to control the cutting speed at up to 20,000 OPM. Personally, I’m not a big fan of triggers on multitools and believe they have no place in a multitool and are better suited for other tools like drills and saws for example. However there are many folks who don’t mind or actually like a trigger on a multitool.
This multitool also features 86% less vibration although no mention as to what they compared it to. My assumption is that they are most likely comparing it to their PBLMT50 model. The front of the tool also features an LED light to aid in low light which is a handy feature.
Ryobi is again using the widely used latch and pin mount system. This uses a latch to unlock/lock a removable pin used to attach and remove blades. This method is a tool-less method and used to be the best thing since the archaic bolt and hex key systems. However since then, the latch and pin system has been improved with newer mount systems with a latch and no pin as was used by Bosch before the Starlock mount was introduced.
In my opinion, the Starlock mount is easily the best multitool mount out there for its ease of use and lightning fast blade changes. There is no pin to remove and potentially lose and the blades literally snap in place to install. They also pop off. I really like TTI power tools. TTI is the brand behind tools by Ryobi, Ridgid, and Milwaukee to name a few. And I wish TTI would embrace the Starlock mount in their multitools.
