Ridgid 18V Brushless Oscillating Multitool R86242B – Features
While Ridgid is no stranger to oscillating multitools, most of their earlier models were not standalone tools but instead head attachments to their proprietary JobMax power bases. It wasn’t until recently that the finally came out with a standalone unit. This seems to be their second standalone unit.
Oscillating multitools are one of those tools that like the name suggests, can do a variety of things and do what multiple tools can. They cut various materials like wood, plastics, and even metals. It can also scrape and be used as sanders. They are the jack of all trades type of tool but master of none, however they do have a trip up their sleeve in which they are good for flush cutting. I especially like to use these for undercutting door jambs when installing flooring and they do a great job. Sure an undercut jamb saw works better in most instances and faster to boot, however those are specialty tools and can’t be used for anything else if you think about it. Whereas oscillating multitools can be used for a variety of things.
Just like the first standalone model that was announced in 2021, this model also sports a brushless motor, LED light in the front, and a tool-free latch and pin system.

We can also see that they’ve gone back to their favorite power on method of a multifinger trigger/paddle at the bottom. I’m not a big fan of triggers on multitools but they seem to be Ridgid’s favorite pastime feature for these tools.
Multitools usually have a variable speed dial to choose different speeds. Ridgid opted for something different here with 3 selectable speeds on top that cap the max speed and the trigger is variable speed. I still think they should have went with the more traditional slide on/off switch and variable speed dial, but that’s just me.
